Tape scales provide economical, easily installed one piece scales.  They can be mounted horizontally or vertically to obtain information on hard to measure travel lengths in applications such as long bed metal cutting.

Tape scales can also be "wrapped" on cylindrical mounting surfaces to provide angular position feedback on very large rotary axes.  Typical applications include large telescopes and large machine tools.
